Permaculture began with gardens, chickens and food forests. In its early days, it was all about designing sustainable systems for growing food in harmony with nature. And rightly so; these practices remain vital in a world facing ecological breakdown.
But something deeper has been growing beneath the surface. Over time, permaculture has expanded from landscapes to lifescapes. From composting kitchen scraps to composting cultural norms. From planting trees to planting the seeds of new ways of being together.
Today, permaculture is no longer just about agriculture; it’s about regenerative cultures.
We are learning that sustainability starts with how we treat each other, how we organise our communities, and how we relate to ourselves. This shift calls for a new kind of leadership. Not the top-down, extractive kind, but leadership rooted in listening, care, and cooperation. Permaculture leadership is about nurturing the conditions where life (human and the more-than-human life) can flourish.
It is leadership that invites belonging instead of burnout, resilience instead of rigidity, and creativity instead of control. And in these complex times, this is exactly the kind of leadership the world needs.
