Permaculture design for new property

Develop a design based on permaculture principles for the area beside the house to:

  • allow year round vegetable production for my wife and I, with surpolus going to the community
  • be a showcase of permaculture principles to show what is possible and to inspire others
  • provide a modest additional income through natural products eg. basket making
  • serve as a demonstration site for future course attendees
  • minimise the use of plastic by maximising the use of natural and available resources

Designer(s)

I gained my PDC in 2017 and my diploma in 2021. My passion is teaching school kids how to grow vegetables and appreciate the environment.

Project(s) involved

The property is designed using permaculture principles and over time will demonstrate many aspects of permaculture - low carbon footprint, food forest, biodiversity, resilience, appropriate technology.

We (will) hold courses and workshops in many of these aspects.

Reflection

Roses

Going well, although position of features is being dictated by reality. A plan is exactkly thet "a plan" and reality differs.

Thorns

The prolonged and very wet Irish winter (2026) has significantly impeded progress. We have had to develop workarounds as only light machinery is able to work in the field. Still this has been great for the willow trees.

Buds

All going well

Design comments

Thank you for sharing Rory. This looks fantastic. Learned a new word: Esker.

One suggestion: the already existing buildings are difficult to spot. It makes it difficult to understand the objects of the design in relation to Zone 0.
