The European Permaculture Convergence 2021

Our world must embark on the biggest period of change we have ever known. We all know this, but we don’t always know what to do about it. That’s why we’re holding a European Permaculture Convergence (EUPC) online this October – to bring together those who want to bring about positive change so we can collectively work towards it.

Since the early 1980s, permaculture initiatives, groups and networks have been pioneering new approaches to food, energy, housing and community. Now, more than ever, we need to share what we are doing and inspire a huge new wave of permaculture action across Europe.

Hosted by the Permaculture Association (Britain) and following on from a successful UK Convergence in 2020, the EUPC will have a programme drawn from across the continent.

National, regional and local organisations will share sessions and workshops, as well as pre-recorded tours of permaculture projects.

Themes will include everything from climate change action to regenerative agriculture, with something to suit every level. Experienced practitioners will rub virtual shoulders with those new to permaculture to ensure no voice goes unheard.

The programme will include content such as self-sufficiency and gardening, which many are now interested in finding out more about. For those who have been working in this field for longer, there will be deep dive sessions and strategic meetings focused on the development of permaculture in Europe.

The aim is to create a diverse and accessible event that sows the seeds for a strong European Permaculture Network and a renewed cross-border community.

The primary working language of the convergence will be English, with other options explored to help remove barriers, including some edge events in other European languages.

So as many people as possible can attend, there is a ‘donate what you can afford’ structure to this event. Cost is on a sliding scale from €15 to €100 (payments are in Euros rather than GBP).

A donation of just €30 is the equivalent of just €3 per day! With over 30 hours of curated content between 8-17 October, as well as other sessions being organised over the course of the event, there will be plenty to choose from.

This event supports the development of permaculture all across Europe. Funds raised will be used to help support and grow our networks, so that more people can bring about their own positive change. Your donation makes this work possible, so we are grateful for whatever you can give.

New process for adding events to our calendar

Due to some changes in our team, Volkmar and Leo left, we had to streamline our process of addingt events to our event calendar a little.

In the past our calendar was managed by Leo and Cathrine. With Leo gone we need to make sure that Cathrine doesn’t have to work more.

Our new process is described in our submitting guidlines and involves creating a so called iCal file. Basically you have to use another website to create a certain file that we can then import into the EuPN calendar.

Please make sure that you follow that new process and help us with our work.

Thank you!

It is with great pleasure that we inform you of the birth of the Swiss Permaculture Academy!

According to Barbara Garofoli “it was a great co-creation process where everyone gave their best for a common goal. There has been so much cooperation, attention, sensitivity and commitment from everyone, so touching.”

A special thanks to Massimo Candela and Elisabetta Dallavalle, both presidents of the Accademia Italiana di Permacultura and the Ellipse group, who repeatedly supported Barbara Garofoli from a distance and helped to “untangle” some knots in Switzerland and to clear the way. A special thanks to Elena Parmiggiani who came directely from Italy to support the birth of the Swiss Permaculture Academy.

As a diploma-holder of the AIP – Accademia Italiana di Permacultura – Barbara Garofoli organized in 2013 the first PDC in french-speaking side of Switzerland and since then accompanied a group of students in their Action Learning Pathway.

In 2016 the first diplomas were delivered in French Switzerland by the AIP and on 2018 the Swiss Permaculture Academy was born, in collaboration with the AIP and the Permaculture Association of the Italian Switzerland.

Working in connection with the AIP is a great example of simmetry, a complimentary criteria during the accreditation but so important to built cooperation, partnership support and sharing.

At the moment in Switzerland are 21 diploma holders and more than 70 students involved in the Active Learning Pathway .

To support students the Academy offers an Action Learning Manual as well as a list of tutors with a description of each diploma-holder.

The objectif of the ASP is to be a reference for the permaculture movement in Switzerland, supporting students in their active learning pathway and working in collaboration with other permaculture experiences around the world.

The ASP engages to co-create a structure interconnected with all the permaculture institutions in Europe and representing the different visions of all the actors involved in the permaculture movement in Switzerland.

Official documents are available in French, Italian, German and English, about PDC curriculum and criteria as well as Accreditation criteria for the diploma of Applied Permaculture Design.
